They’d driven two hours, and Vivi hadn’t spoken or moved the entire time. Now that the high of watching him kill two men was winding down, her eyes watered even as she fought sleep. She hadn’t slept for more than a few hours since Saturday; still, he wasn’t crazy enough to risk stopping for another hotel. His phone rang, and Eddie answered using the stereo’s Bluetooth.

Blu’s voice came through. “You want to guess how much money it costs to convince a man that a blood stain on his motel room floor isn’t really there? Or you want to guess how long it takes to move two bodies from a motel while guests are checking in and out?” Blu sounded pissed.

Eddie cursed under his breath. “I’m on my way in.” A quick glance at Vivi revealed she wasn’t paying any attention to him or his conversation.

Blu’s growl sounded throughout the interior of the vehicle. “You sure as fuck better be, Eddie. What the fuck, man? After prison, you said you were going to lay low, be our eyes and ears—quietly be our eyes and ears.” Anger morphed into confusion. “Are you doing this out of some false sense of fatherhood, Eddie? ’Cause I’m telling you now, it ain’t gonna work out in your favor. The woman was most likely lying to you. She was looking for cash, and when she found out she wasn’t going to get it, she abandoned the kid on your doorstep.” When Eddie said nothing, Blu continued. “Searched your trailer like the Feds search for shit and I didn’t find a damned thing. Searched the last motel you wrecked and found nothing. Man, are you going motel to motel destroying things for shits and giggles?”

Vivi covered her face with her hands and began to cry. “What are we doing?”

“Christ,” Blu moaned. “Is that a woman with you?”

“She’s been helping me—” Eddie began.

“Fuck that. Get back here so we can get this shit settled, Eddie. We’ll take the kid for you; you and your woman can get back to doing what you do and all will be settled.”

A long silence convinced Eddie that Blu had hung up the phone, until Blu uttered, “What the hell is going on with my brothers and women these days?” Then he disconnected.

Eddie kept driving, needing to put more distance between him and the incident. “Vivi…” He didn’t know what to say. Everyone he’d ever been associated with had known about and accepted his lifestyle. A biker was who Eddie had been from the moment he’d thrown a leg over his first bike. He’d been a brother to the Renegades from the first day he met them, and he’d been a killer from the age of eighteen. A good one too. A honed skill used to kill those who preyed on the innocent. He could have been worse, and he had killed worse men than himself.

“What are they going to do to her once they find out about their men?” Vivi whispered, and Eddie couldn’t help it.
